Put Freehit on your Android home screen

Chrome and Samsung Internet can turn a website into an app on your phone. Do it once and Freehit gets an icon next to your other apps, opens without an address bar, and lands on the match list. No file comes down, no permission is asked for, and it takes less than a minute.

One tap, then confirm in the box your browser shows. No box? The steps below get you the same icon.

Freehit is already on this phone. Look for the icon on your home screen.

By hand, in Chrome

1

Open the site in Chrome itself

Type freehit.eu into Chrome's address bar (Samsung Internet is fine too). A link tapped inside WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram opens in that app's own mini browser, which can show the site but cannot add it to your home screen.

Then tap the three dots in the top right corner.

2

Choose Add to Home screen

Newer Chrome shows Add to Home screen and then asks Install or Create shortcut: pick Install. Some versions say Install app straight away in the menu. Both lead to the same place.

Chrome sometimes offers a small install bar at the foot of the page on its own; tapping that does step 2 for you.

3

Confirm

A box shows the Freehit icon. Tap Install. The icon appears on your home screen, and on most phones in the app drawer as well.

✓

Open it

Tap the icon. Freehit opens full screen on the matches of the day. Quality choice, the remembered quality and the automatic reconnect all work exactly as they do in the browser.

Nothing ever needs updating: the icon loads the site as it is that day.

Samsung Internet: menu (three lines, bottom right), Add page to, Home screen, Add. When a site can be installed, Samsung Internet also shows a small download arrow in the address bar that does it in one tap.
Firefox: menu, Add to Home screen. Firefox makes a plain shortcut that opens in Firefox with its bars, so Chrome or Samsung Internet give the better result.

If something is off

The menu has no Add to Home screen and no Install app. The page is inside another app's browser (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and Gmail all do this). Copy the address, open Chrome from your home screen and paste it there.

The icon opens a tab with an address bar. You got a shortcut, not the app. Hold the icon, remove it, and repeat the steps; the box in step 3 must offer Install.

The entry is greyed out. Check the app drawer: Freehit may already be there. Otherwise update Chrome in the Play Store and try again.

The button at the top did nothing. Browsers decide for themselves when to offer that box. The manual steps do not need it.
